BANDY CREEK | Oneida’s Shirley Torwirt was one of the winners in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area’s annual photo contest, the winners of which were announced Friday.
Torwirt won first place in the Tennessee Landscapes category with her photo entitled “Reflections.”
Winners were awarded in a total of seven categories.
Nichole Newport of Robbins finished as runner-up with her “Off Trail Wonders” photo.
The entries were judged by members of Southern Appalachian Nature Photographers.
Winners included:
- Youth Category: “Purplehead Sneezeweed,” Wren Heartway of Floyd, Va.
- Recreation: “Serenity in the Woods,” Linda Spangler of Oak Ridge, Tenn.
- Dark Skies: “Milky Way Barn,” Andrew Griswold of Hermitage, Tenn.
- Flora & Fauna: “Buckeye Butterfly,” Peggy Yaeger of Corbin, Ky.
- Kentucky Landscapes: “Blue Heron Under Moontlight,” Travic Tracey of Rocky Top, Tenn.
- Tennessee Landscapes: “Reflections,” Shirley Torwirt of Oneida.
- Human History: “Scenic O&W Bridge,” Rich Yaeger of Corbin, Ky.
Runners-up: “Off-Trail Wonders,” Nichole Newport of Robbins; “Country Roads,” Jim Jayroe of Newbern, Tenn.; “Wildflowers at Yahoo Falls,” Laurel Nelson of Hebron, Ky.; “Bergamot,” Kathy Greene of Corbin, Ky.; “Great Spangled Fritallary on Flower,” Cheyenne Gregory of Monticello, Ky.
